The Legal Profession Act 1976 (Act 166), which
consolidates the law relating to the legal profession in
Malaysia, confers powers to the Bar Council to make
rules under various provisions, as and when necessary.
Since the coming into force of the Act, the Bar Council
has made many rules for the legal profession. This
publication, Rules and Rulings of the Bar Council
Malaysia, updated as at 5 December 2007, contains
various rules and rulings in 19 Chapters relating to the
legal profession. Among others, it includes Letterhead
& stationery, Advertising, Professional practice,
Court practice and Pupillage. It also contains the
Solicitors’ Remuneration (Enforcement) Rules 2004,
which came into force on 1 November 2004.
Advocates and Solicitors and pupils are reminded that
they are expected to know and abide by, inter alia
the Etiquette Rules 1978, Publicity Rules 2001 and the
Rulings of the Bar Council. Breach of these Rulings,
will constitute “misconduct” under the Act and may
lead to disciplinary proceedings against the Advocate
and Solicitor concerned or his law firm.
